SCOUTMASTER’S MINTUE

June 4, 2007

Mike Jay, Assistant Scout Master, Troop 176

Thanks for coming this evening.  Just a few final thoughts.

So, who is a good speller? Ok Tyler Williams spell scouting. S C O U T I N G.

Great. I want each of you to visualize the word SCOUTING.

Now what does it spell if you leave
the first two letters off?         O U T I N G.

Boy Scouting is built around the outdoor program, in fact the 1st Boy Scout meeting was a campout at Brownsea Island almost 100 years ago.

I hope you have seen from the slide shows how much fun was had during the different outings since the last COH.  Scouting has exposed many of you to different activities that will be with you for years to come. Each one is unique in its own way. And from each activity, there is one SPL selected to lead this event. It is a chance to develop leadership skills in a safe environment. Leadership is a life long skill that will benefit each one of you. Outings are where friendships are made and leadership skills are put into action.

Unfortunately, only about 30% of our Scouts participate in one outing per month. So what are you getting out of Scouting if you don’t participate in the Troop Outings?

I encourage you to participate in the next planning session coming up on Saturday, June 10 and voice your opinion.  We’ll meet here from 8:00 am to noon. Think about what types of outings will appeal to more Scouts.  Think about your participation in the Troop.  What do you want to remember about your Scouting experience? Remember, this is your troop.

May the great Scoutmaster of all Scouts be with you until we meet again. ...

I’d like to turn this back to the Host.
